You can join if you:
- are a Canadian citizen or immigrant,
- are willing to commit a minimum of three months of your time,
- successfully complete a criminal record check, and,
- attend an orientation session and additional training as needed.
A criminal record check is required due to the nature of our work with vulnerable populations. Applications may take time to complete and we thank you for your patience!
As a volunteer you will:
- practice and use your skills and knowledge in a variety of areas,

The Moving Ahead program supports newcomer youth, adults and families who have many needs and challenges affecting their settlement. In your own language, staff help you learn about life in your community. Services are provided at home or in the community. Staff offer emotional support and counselling, while providing settlement information.

Moving Ahead FreeRunning newcomer youth programs will help you get the skills you need to succeed. This program helps vulnerable immigrant and refugee youth who struggle to adjust to life in Canada. Support is available to find a job, socialize, and gain life and leadership skills.
Services are available in Amharic, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, Tigrigna, Arabic, Turkish, French and English.

CLOSED: Support for Newcomers with Disabilities - MOSAIC is an advocate for immigrants and refugees with disabilities. The Accessibility for Newcomers program connects them with employment and disability support services. This program also aims to create a local network of accessibility and settlement service providers. This will support the City of Vancouver’s new Accessibility Strategy.
Services are available as one-on-one support and outreach to other programs. Together we can improve the lives of immigrants with disabilities in Vancouver.

Play a direct role in the language development of newcomers by supporting our English Language instruction program (LINC). Language is the key that opens many doors!
Learning English is important for newcomers to settle in Canada. As a volunteer in the MOSAIC English Language Programs, you will play a direct role in the language development of newcomers. Volunteers give the extra attention that can make all the difference. Language Centre Volunteers support our team of LINC instructors in the roles of Conversation Circle Facilitators and Classroom Support Volunteers. Language Centre Volunteers are:
- age 19 or over
- speak advanced level English
- experience teaching adults or TESOL is an asset

Just ‘one day’ of your life can transform the life of a New Canadian. As a Career Mentor, you will volunteer up to 24 hours over three months mentoring a new immigrant as they prepare for career success in Canada. Your knowledge of the local job market and of Canadian workplace culture is invaluable to immigrant professionals. Mentors are matched to new immigrants with international experience in your field or who are looking to transition into your field of expertise. With your help, newcomers can better navigate the local labour market, job opportunities, and be prepared to present themselves to potential employers. To volunteer, you should have:
- three years of professional experience in Metro Vancouver
- connections to professional and business networks
- an interest in other cultures
- strong interpersonal skills
Your volunteer commitment is flexible and can accommodate your schedule. You will receive training and ongoing support from program staff as well as knowing you are making a difference in a newcomer’s life.
Culture Connections Social Mentoring Program | Volunteer | MOSAIC (mosaicbc.org)
Volunteer two hours a week helping a newcomer connect to their community through one-on-one engagement. We believe that the first step in connecting to the community is to make friends and to socialize one-on-one. As a Social Mentor, you will volunteer two hours a week for three months with your newcomer mentee. Together you will explore shared interests, learn about each other’s lives and build connections. Share your personal experiences as they start their life in Canada. Social Mentors are individuals who are:
- living in the Greater Vancouver area
- familiar with Canadian life
- fluent in English
- age 23 or over
- born in Canada or have moved to Canada 5 or more years ago

Canadian Citizenship Preparation: This comprehensive 10-week program provides support for individuals studying for the Canadian Citizenship Test. Through interactive lessons and resources, our program will help you understand the Discover Canada Study Guide and prepare you to take the test with confidence.
Canadian Fitness Connection: This eight-week course provides a unique experience to learn, practice and explore. Participants gain insight into fitness, make new friends and explore life in Canada while improving their English skills. Gain new knowledge and have fun while staying fit!
Self Employment for Newcomers: This program provides newcomers to Canada with the resources to launch their own business. English Conversation Club: The YMCA's English Conversation Clubs are a fantastic way to build English language skills, meet friends who are fellow newcomers, and learn more about life in Canada and your local community. Facilitators lead small group discussions at each session about everything from social customs in Canada to Canadian prime ministers.
Connect2Work: Connect2Work is a pre-employment program helping newcomer youth build life and employability skills. The program offers skill-building workshops, one-on-one employment coaching, ESL supports and valuable networking opportunities. Join the program to further support your settlement into Canada and continue developing your connection to various employment opportunities.
Conversations for Life: This four-week course is designed to help participants build their English conversational skills. Participants will explore topics related to living and working in Canada and will have the opportunity to build their personal and professional networks. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to confidently engage in conversations.
Child Care Career Exploration: Learn about pathways to becoming a certified Early Childhood Educator and see if working with early years children is the right career for you. In this 10-week course, participants have the opportunity to meet professionals working in the field, strengthen communication skills and receive support with resume writing.
Social and Educational Events: This program offers a wide range of events and workshops for newcomers to Canada. Through these events, participants can learn about life and work in Canada and practice English. Participants can also enjoy activities in Vancouver and throughout the Lower Mainland while connecting with other newcomers.

YWCA Axis is a one-to-one employment program for self-identified immigrant women who have experienced violence. This 12-week, trauma-informed program helps participants develop an employment or training plan to achieve sustainable employment or further education. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- One-to-one services from a professional, compassionate career advisor to develop a personalized education or employment action plan
- Services offered in English, Punjabi, Hindi, Farsi, Dari, Mandarin, Cantonese, Filipino, and Ukrainian

- One-to-one skills training to overcome impacts of violence/abuse, enhance reliance and strengthen confidence

NewToBC is all about making connections. It is a library settlement initiative that connects newcomer immigrants and refugees with essential settlement information, public libraries, other service provider organizations, and, ultimately, BC communities.
NewToBC plays a unique role in the settlement sector by offering services that are responsive to the evolving needs of newcomers, that complement and raise awareness about resources and services offered by public libraries and other service provider organizations, and that support BC communities as they welcome growing newcomer populations.

Library Champions Project - NewToBC
The Library Champions Project (LCP) is a three-month volunteer program for new immigrants. During the project, Library Champions are trained to conduct outreach to other new immigrants. The LCP’s four training sessions focus on building communication, presentation, and outreach skills and on gaining an understanding of the range of programs, services, and resources that are provided by libraries and immigrant and community service agencies. After the training, Library Champions develop an outreach plan that is doable for them and fits their schedule. These plans include sharing information with friends, family, colleagues, and other community members, giving group presentations, speaking with community agencies, and using social media. LCP facilitators support the Library Champions with their outreach by helping them identify additional contacts and overcoming any challenges.
On average, each Library Champion shares information with more than 50 other new immigrants. As of March 2023, more than 2,100 new immigrants have been trained as Library Champions and these individuals have reached out to more than 108,000 other new immigrants!
Libraries across the province are a part of the Library Champions Project. The project is also supported by numerous immigrant-serving organizations and community agencies which assist with project promotion and referrals.

Building on the information shared in the January 2016 Migration Matters Supporting Newcomers with Disabilities edition and responding to the need for more resources for newcomers with disabilities, this 90-minute 2017 webinar explored barriers to accessing settlement services for newcomers with disabilities and how providers can improve accessibility to assist clients’ integration into communities.
This webinar focused on:

- accessibility and inclusion (including inclusive language)
- the Canadian context of disability awareness

For newcomers to Canada, accessing services can be a challenging experience. Language and cultural barriers can make it difficult for newcomers to navigate the system and understand their rights. Newcomers may also be unaware of the diverse array of services available to them, or the appropriate channels to access them. This is further complicated for people with disabilities – who are often dependent on having access to medical and caregiving services.
Identifying Challenges for Newcomers With Disabilities - On November 9, 2022, ninety-one participants gathered in Downtown Vancouver to address the question: “How can we work better as a disability service community to improve services for newcomers with disabilities?” This forum, known as the “Newcomers with Disabilities Forum”, was created to illuminate the struggles of newcomers with disabilities.

- Translation services should be provided across disability, immigration, and healthcare organizations.

Register to get a doctor or nurse practitioner - When you register, you are added to a list of people in need of a primary care provider in your community. Family doctors and nurse practitioners will use the list when they are available to accept new patients.
Registration takes less than 5 minutes. You need to provide:
- Personal Health Number (PHN), found on your BC Services Card
- Home address
- Email address and phone number
How to register in other languages - Call 8-1-1 to register for the Health Connect Registry in languages other than English. Translation services are available in over 130 languages.
After dialling 8-1-1, you will be connected with an English-speaking health service navigator. To get service in another language, simply state the language you need support in (for example, say “Punjabi”), and an interpreter who speaks that language will join the call.

Ongoing volunteer opportunities with the Umbrella Mobile Clinic:
The Umbrella Mobile Clinic relies on volunteers to bring much needed medical services to the temporary farm workers who come from Mexico and Guatemala to work in the Fraser Valley. The Mobile Clinic team is comprised of passionate health professionals and general crew members who are committed to health equity and supporting the migrants who are integral to BC’s agricultural industry.

Our Mobile Clinic operates out of a converted trailer that is stored in New Westminster. The trailer is hitched to a truck and travels to various sites in the Fraser Valley. We are looking for drivers with a valid BC driver’s license and experienced in towing. Spanish fluency is an asset, but not required.

LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) is a free program funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). LINC provides basic and intermediate level ENGLISH training for adult newcomers to Canada with a PR card.
Our small classes include group lessons and individual practice. Our TESL-certified teachers are ready to help you with learn English in Burnaby, Surrey, Vancouver and online. If you don’t meet the eligibility criteria, that is not a problem. We have Low-cost English Classes, with flexible prices and classes for every level of English learner.

What is Aphasia? Aphasia is a language problem that masks a person’s inherent competence, and most dramatically affects conversational interaction (talking and understanding), as well as the ability to read and write. Without the ability to participate in conversation, every relationship, life role and almost every life activity is at risk. With additional reading and writing difficulties, the impact is devastating.
Conversation facilitation: Working with groups of 4 – 6 people with aphasia, volunteers enable members to interact, engage, challenge and develop amazing conversations. Always working in partnership with another co-facilitator, your role is to provide communication techniques specific to the members with aphasia, while also taking part in the conversation. This is an integral position in our program and a great starting place for new volunteers.
Other volunteer opportunities include: Painting/Creative Program Assistant; Fitness Assistant; Book Group Co-facilitator; New Beginnings Program Facilitators; One-to-One Computer Facilitator; Outreach Home-Visit Communication Facilitators.

Wavefront Centre provides sign language interpreting services to facilitate communication for people who are Deaf, DeafBlind, and Hard of Hearing who are American Sign Language (ASL) users. Our interpreters are:
- Professionally trained by a recognized interpreter education program
- Required to follow a strict Code of Ethics adopted by the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) wavli.com and the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) www.casli.ca
- All MIS Interpreters are professionally qualified, and are evaluated through skill-based exam administered by Wavefront Centre for Communication Accessibility
Community Interpreting Services (CIS)
CIS is the Sign Language interpreter booking service at Wavefront Centre. We arrange for professional ASL Interpreters to facilitate communication between ASL users and people who can hear. providing complete and accurate information in either spoken English or American Sign Language. Our ASL Interpreters work in various settings such as legal, business, mental health, educational, entertainment, government and public service settings. Interpreting Services are offered on a fee for service basis in most cases.
Medical Interpreting Services (MIS)
MIS is the provincial Sign Language interpreter booking service funded by the Provincial Health Services Authority. Persons who are Deaf, DeafBlind, or Hard of Hearing can access a qualified interpreter through MIS for most medical appointments. MIS will provide interpreters for medical appointments that may be covered under BC MSP, for example:
- General Practitioner and Specialists
- Psychiatrists
- Ophthalmologists
- Gynecology/Obstetrics
- Medical Imaging
- Hospital Stays
MIS Interpreters can be booked in advance for scheduled appointments or through our 24/7 on-call system for urgent situations. MIS services are free of charge to Deaf, DeafBlind, Deafened, and Hard of Hearing individuals who reside in British Columbia and have a BC Service Card. Health Care Providers – If you have a patient who needs an interpreter, interveners, or CART services, please book necessary services through Provincial Language Service.

Located on Richmond’s famous Highway to Heaven, Nanak Niwas Gurdwara was the first religious institution to be build on No.5 Road. This was followed by numerous other religious organizations representing a variety of faiths. India Cultural Centre of Canada (Nanak Niwas Gurdwara) celebrated its 25th anniversary on July 4,2010. Gurdwara Nanak Niwas in the third stage of the historical journey of Gurdwaras in Vancouver. The first stage was the Gurdwara built at 1866 West 2nd Avenue in Vancouver by the Khalsa Diwan Society. As the Sikh community grew, there was need for bigger premises. This resulted in building a brand new Gurdwara at 8000 Ross Street in Vancouver in 1969. 1970’s and 1980’s brought a large number of Indo-Canadian immigrants to Canada. Thus a number of pioneers at Ross Street Gurdwara felt the need for a new Gurdwara and chose Richmond for the site. They bought 10.5 acres of land on No. 5 Road in 1983. The land included a farm house which was renovated into a Gurdwara. In order to meet the needs of a growing congregation the old Gurdwara was replaced by the present one in September 1993.

In December 02, 2003, MSBCA purchased a clubhouse in the City of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. There are approximately 400 family members in the registration. MSBCA membership is open to all Canadians. There are ten Directors in the Board and they are all volunteers elected annually at the Annual General Meeting in September. With the acquisition of a clubhouse, MSBCA is focused in achieving some of the goals and objectives as set out in the Constitution. We have Table Tennis, Darts, Aerobics, Tai-chi and Social Interaction such as dance parties with cultural food being served, cultural dances and ballroom classes. MSBCA holds major functions at least four times a year. Its Annual Family Picnic is the main stay of the Association.
MSBCA has a small cultural dance group with performers from different walks of life. They perform cultural dances originated from Malaysia and Indonesia for public events to enhance the cultures and the art of dancing. The group depends on donations to update their costumes, props, make-up and other accessories.
MSBCA publishes the MSBCA-Link newsletter for members four times a year.

Volunteer work is unpaid work, often with non-profit or charity organizations. It is an excellent way to gain Canadian experience. Before beginning your search for volunteer positions, you should think about your personal needs and how much time you might be able to offer. Volunteer opportunities may vary from one hour to a full day each week, for one day only or long term. Some organizations may require an interview, just like a regular job. Use the experience as an opportunity to develop your interviewing skills. When volunteering, get to know the other staff members on your volunteer site and build relationships. Volunteer Co-ordinators may be able to offer you a letter of reference when you apply for paid work, or they may be aware of paid job opportunities.

Vancouver welcomes newcomers from all parts of the world. Newcomers are often at a disadvantage when it comes to learning about First Peoples because of language barriers, access to information, or the time to learn. They may have few opportunities to meet Aboriginal people in their daily lives and may learn about Aboriginal people only in the news. Yet, learning about the rich and diverse history and experiences of Canada’s First Peoples is key to building understanding between non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal communities.
First Peoples: A Guide for Newcomers aims to fill the need for clear information in simple language about the First Peoples in Vancouver. It introduces newcomers to three important topics: who are Aboriginal people (or First Peoples) in Vancouver and Canada; a brief overview of the relationship between the Government of Canada and First Peoples; and current initiatives and ways for newcomers to learn more about Aboriginal people in the community.
First Peoples: A Guide for Newcomers grew out of the Vancouver Dialogues Project (2010-2013), a City of Vancouver initiative to create more opportunity for understanding between Aboriginal and immigrant communities. As participants shared their stories, they found there was a need for educational materials about Aboriginal people for newcomers. The Guide became a key initiative under the Welcoming Communities Project in 2013, and was supported by the Province of B.C. Immigration Integration Branch.
